چکیده

Directional solidification experiments on hypoperitectic Cu–Sn alloys have been performed at very low velocity in a high thermal gradient to ensure planar front growth of both phases. The diameter of the sample has been reduced to 500 lm to strongly reduce convection. Lamellar and fibrous peritectic cooperative growth of the primary aand peritectic b-phases has been observed on length spanning several millimeters. For the first time in a high solidification interval peritectic alloy, a quenched interface of both phases in contact with the liquid has been obtained. An unexpectedly high volume fraction of the primary phase, which furthermore fluctuates over time, has been observed. This is attributed to the transient state of the (a + b) growth front to a steady state and the associated evolution of the large diffusion layer ahead of the solid–liquid interface. 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Detachment of secondary dendrite arm in a directionally solidified Sn-Ni peritectic alloy under deceleration growth condition

In order to better understand the detachment mechanism of secondary dendrite arm during peritectic solidification, the detachment of secondary dendrite arm from the primary dendrite arms in directionally solidified Sn-36at.%Ni peritectic alloys is investigated at different deceleration rates. Extensive detachment of secondary dendrite arms from primary stem is observed below peritectic reaction...

Application of single pan thermal analysis to Cu–Sn peritectic alloys

Single pan thermal analyses (SPTA) have been performed on Cu–14.5 wt.% Sn, Cu–21.3 wt.% Sn and Cu–26.8 wt.% Sn peritectic alloys. For this purpose, a SPTA assembly has been built and calibrated. As the latent heat is a function of temperature and composition during solidification of alloys, a new heat flow model coupled to a Cu–Sn thermodynamic database has been defined for the calculation of t...

Structural and Mechanical Characterization of Austempered Cu - Sn Ductile Iron Alloys

The effect of heat treatment and alloying elements of copper and tin on the microstructure and mechanical properties of austempered ductile cast iron alloys is investigated. The austenitizing temperature of 890°C, the isothermal transformation (austempering) temperatures of 285, 335 and 375°C, and austempering times of 15, 30, 75 and 150 minutes are studied. The alloying elements of copper and ...

Direct formation of peritectic phase but no primary phase appearance within Ni83.25Zr16.75 peritectic alloy during free fall

Ni83.25Zr16.75 peritectic alloy was containerlessly solidified in a drop tube. When the droplet diameter exceeds a critical value (Dcrit), Ni7Zr2 phase primarily solidifies, followed by the peritectic reaction of Ni7Zr2 + L → Ni5Zr. Once the droplet diameter is smaller than the critical value (Dcrit), peritectic phase Ni5Zr directly solidifies from the undercooled melt by completely suppressing...

Effect of a weak transverse magnetic field on the microstructure in directionally solidified peritectic alloys

Effect of a weak transverse magnetic field on the microstructures in directionally solidified Fe-Ni and Pb-Bi peritectic alloys has been investigated experimentally. The results indicate that the magnetic field can induce the formation of banded and island-like structures and refine the primary phase in peritectic alloys. The above results are enhanced with increasing magnetic field. Furthermor...
